Radar evidence for ice in lobate debris aprons in the mid-northern latitudes of Mars

چکیده
[1] Subsurface radar sounding data indicate that lobate debris aprons found in Deuteronilus Mensae in the midnorthern latitudes of Mars are composed predominantly of water ice. The position in time delay and the relatively low amount of signal loss of the apparent basal reflectors below the debris aprons indicate that aprons contain only a minor component of lithic material. The current presence of large ice masses at these latitudes has important implications for the climate evolution of Mars, and for future targets for in situ exploration. Citation: Plaut, J. J., A. Origin of martian northern hemisphere mid-latitude lobate debris aprons
Lobate debris aprons in the martian midto high-latitudes (northern and southern hemispheres) have been interpreted as ice-related features that indicate periglacial climate conditions as recently as late Amazonian. Using MOLA topographic profiles perpendicular to apron flow fronts, we surveyed 36 debris aprons in the northern hemisphere found in the regions of Mareotis, Protonilus, and Deuteron...
متن کاملIce-driven Degradation Styles in the Martian Mid-latitudes: Constraints from Lobate Debris Aprons, Lineated Valley Fill, and Small Flow Lobes
Introduction. The Martian mid-latitudes are regions of high scientific interest given recent descriptions of mantling deposits and glacial features believed to be relicts of recent ice ages on Mars [1-4]. Geomorphic indicators of ground ice have long been proposed to be concentrated in mid-latitude zones based on analyses of such features as lobate debris aprons, lineated valley fill, and conce...
متن کاملRing-mold craters in lineated valley fill and lobate debris aprons on Mars: Evidence for subsurface glacial ice
[1] Ring-mold craters (RMCs), concentric crater forms shaped like a truncated torus and named for their similarity to the cooking implement, are abundant in lobate debris aprons (LDA) and lineated valley fill (LVF) in the northern mid-latitudes on Mars, but are not seen in surrounding terrain. LDA and LVF have been interpreted to form by flow of debris, but uncertainty remains concerning the me...

متن کاملFlow patterns of lobate debris aprons and lineated valley fill north of Ismeniae Fossae, Mars: Evidence for extensive mid-latitude glaciation in the Late Amazonian
A variety of Late Amazonian landforms on Mars have been attributed to the dynamics of ice-related processes. Evidence for large-scale, mid-latitude glacial episodes existing within the last 100 million to 1 billion years on Mars has been presented from analyses of lobate debris aprons (LDA) and lineated valley fill (LVF) in the northern and southern mid-latitudes. We test the glacial hypothesis...
